Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin by Tad Hills is one of my all time favorite autumn books for toddlers and preschoolers. You can tell by the dog-eared corner!
Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin is one of the best fall book for toddlers….ever!
I love this book because every time that I have read it, the child has loved the the story. Honest! The pictures are charming, clear, and easy to comprehend.
The text is simple so even toddlers can enjoy it or you can embellish it for older children. It has a predictable storyline so it is very easy for children to become involved in the search for the pumpkin.
Duck and Goose Activities:
1. This is a great book to read before you go to the pumpkin patch at Halloween, before you make pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, and any time during the fall.
2. It teaches children positions such as: in, on, and under.
3. It encourages and teaches about teamwork and friendship in a simple way. Make simple comments such as: “Isn’t it great how Duck and Goose work together to find a pumpkin?”
4. Play hide and seek with a pumpkin in your house or outside on a beautiful fall day. Again, talk about prepositions such as in, on, under, and behind. You can use the lines from the book. For example: “Is our pumpkin under the table?”
5. When reading the book, encourage your child to respond to the questions by giving a little wait time. “Is our pumpkin in the log……?” Shake your head ‘no’ to give a physical prompt, then say ‘no’. Toddlers who aren’t even quite two can interact with this story and will learn to say ‘no’. It is amazing and totally adorable!
Again, this book always gets an great response from the children that I read it too. It is one that can be read over and over again. Thanks Tad for great book!
