At this time of year parents usually ask me for Christmas gift suggestions for their child. My recommendation is to keep it simple.
1. Blocks ~ Blocks are great for boys and girls. They enhance fine motor development and eye hand coordination. They promote pretend play and you can use other toys that are already on hand such as cars, trucks, barbie dolls, and action figures.
2. Any toys that promote dramatic or pretend play ~ Farm sets, vehicles, kitchen sets, doll houses, and tool sets are examples. These types of toys encourage learning in all developmental areas. They increase vocabulary, enhance social skills as children play together or as you play with your child. They enhance motor skills as they manipulate the toys.
3. Balls ~ Choose the type of ball by the age of your child. For example, if you have a toddler you want larger, soft, washable balls. Again, balls encourage fine and gross motor development. Playing catch or rolling a ball back and forth encourages turn-taking and social interaction. Toddlers learn cause and affect by throwing a ball and seeing what happens next.
4. Books! Books! Books! Consider your child’s age when purchasing books. Babies needs books that are cloth or vinyl and can be chewed and are baby safe. Toddlers also need books that are sturdy. I like books in which the illustrations are photographs or are simple clear illustrations. Touch and feel books are great too. There is a tremendous selection of books for preschoolers. You know your child, their interests, and attention span; consider these variables when selecting books for your preschooler.
My favorite to places to shop online are:
These companies have great prices:
I urge you not to over spend on your child. Gifts are fun but often they end up in a pile that is forgotten in just a few weeks and sold a garage sale for a small fraction of the original price. The best gift you can give your child is your time and attention.
Have fun together!
